I will be posting more again very soon. Lots of things in the works for me this year, and I can't wait to finish planning and sharing with all of you. Wow, how incredibly busy I have been. I have so much on the go, and I suspect that I will not have much time to blog in the next several weeks. My daughter just started to kindergarten, and so now I am finding my spare time is not so spare. :) I am currently working on designing a art display to showcase my work in the Artrium at the Quesnel Arts and Recreation Centre for the month of October! That is really exciting. I am also have some workshops coming up in November and December that I need to plan for. I have several items for sale at Cariboo Keepsakes in Quesnel, and I soon will be volunteering my time working some shifts there pretty soon. I also have another venture in the works...details to come later. So, busy times ahead for me. All this, and with orders for soaps, and scarves to do as well!! Plus we are planning a big trip to the states for Christmas that I need to make stuff for! Exciting times ahead! :) Here are some pictures of my latest projects.

Bleach Stenciled T- Shirts

A very cute and fun craft to do with older kids is bleach stenciling! My husband and daughter turned me on to this just recently. All you need is a coloured t-shirt, spray bottle, bleach, stick on stencils. You can make your own stencils out of contact paper if you are artistic, or if you aren't as artistic and want an easier option, you can buy pre-cut adhesive stencils that you can use more than once.

For the stenciling solution, you mix 50/50 bleach and water and put in the spray bottle.
You add your design to your t-shirt with the adhesive stencils. You will want to do this outside, so that you don't get bleach on anything you don't want to. Spray the design with the bleach solution really well, and let sit for 5 minutes or more, just until you notice the shirt has lightened. Then take a garden hose, and rinse off the bleach to stop the bleaching process. You can also submerge the shirt in a container of clean cool water to wash off the bleach. Take off the stencil and ring out. Then you can hang your shirt up to dry outside, or put in the dryer on a low heat setting. Once dry your shirt is ready!! Enjoy!!

The art for these two shirts was inspired by my daughter. The orange shirt is a copy of some of my daughter's own art work : space cats!

Hello, sorry for the lack of posting this last little while. I have been really busy with projects. I have been finishing up orders, and making some really pretty things.
I finished up all of my bears orders finally, made a beautiful nuno felted scarf, made a dino pillow, and I just made a pretty quilted rag pillow last night!

I have written about my friend Erin and her wonderful little boy Thor from Paw 4 Thor in recent weeks. Thor was diagnosed with autism, general anxiety disorder, and also sensory processing disorder a couple of months ago. Erin has been feverishly fund raising for Thor's service dog that he desperately needs. She has raised nearly half of the $13,000 she needs for just the dog.

She is raising the funds to get his dog through Paws 4 Ability. Erin is currently in the top 3 in a contest with giveback.org to win $50,000 for a charity of her choice. She has been in the top and second positions, but she is now back to third place as of today. She has until July 17th to pull this out of the bag. If she wins the money,the monies will be used to top up her son's account with Paws4Ability and the rest will be given to other families trying to get a service dog as well. She gets 50 impact points for every person she gets to sign up with giveback.org. At the end of the contest , the person with the most impact points wins the money. The money goes directly to the charity of her choice, and she has chosen Paws4Ability.

Lovely Dogwood for a Southern Gal living up North!

I have a friend Dana, she is a fellow artisan. She is the heart and soul behind Colors of the Woods Jewelry. She makes lovely jewelry as well as beautifully handcrafted ceramics. I asked her if she would make me one of her lovely business card holders, and in exchange I would needle felt her a bookmark. So, she asked for something that would remind her of the South, where we both grew up respectively, but only met virtually after we had long left Alabama. So, I decided on the Dogwood Tree which I thought was the state tree, but I am mistaken. Anyhow, the Dogwood Tree is a beautiful tree, and has fragrant white or pink flowers. It is a lovely sweet reminder of my years growing up in Alabama.

I have seen the concept, but didn't know what it was called. I saw a really cool commercial for Natural Gas that was pretty awesome. I was googling earlier about felting, and somehow came across this super cool event happening in Vancouver. I am not a knitter per se, but I know people that are. At any rate, it would be super cool to see. :)

Quesnel Crafter's Society

I am really excited that I am going to submit some of my work to the Quesnel Crafter's Society. The society runs a co-op gift shop in town called Cariboo Keepsakes. I am going to talk to one of the ladies on Thursday, and submit some of my work for approval from the board. If my work is approved, then I can join the society, and be part of the co-op. I am kind of nervous about submitting my work for scrutiny, but I think it will be just fine. I am the world's worst critic of my own work. I think we all tend to be hard on ourselves when it comes to creativity. One of my submissions is a needle felted string jointed bunny rabbit. I drew up the pattern yesterday, and started working on it yesterday afternoon. I think it is going to turn out really cute. :)

I have been pretty busy with projects lately, so I haven't been posting much lately at all, and for that I am sorry.
I however, have something really exciting to share with you all.

When, I turned 40 back in December, I decided it was high time that I get a tattoo. I have been toying with the idea for about 15 years. I finally decided it was time to make that a reality.

I really wanted to work with a female artist, and was happy to discover a young artist had opened a studio in the basement of the hair salon I am going to be selling some hair accessories. ( If I ever get around to making any!!)

I wrote her, and told her I wanted to meet with her. I threw some ideas out at her. I had a few things I really wanted to incorporate into the tattoo as much as possible. I still have some other ideas maybe for a future tattoo as well. We talked about my thoughts, and her thoughts, and it wasn't until we sat down together that it all came together.

The butterfly has been part of my persona for the last 9 years. My husband wrote a poem for me in which I a butterfly. I will post that poem some day if I can pinpoint where it is. I have Celtic roots , and I feel a kinship with the Celtic culture I can't quite explain. You know how you just have that connection with something you can't quite put your finger on. That is how I feel. So, I definitely wanted a butterfly , and I wanted a Celtic feel to it. So, my artist really wanted to do a realism 3D butterfly, and had been wanting to do one for a long time. So, I agreed that would be a cool thing to do. The reflection shows the image of the butterfly in Celtic knot work.
So, the butterfly represents me, and the reflection represents my Celtic spirit. Pretty awesome, eh? :)
I am super happy with it. I go back in 3 weeks to get touch up work and a little more colour.

I did some re working of this bear I completed the other day. The more I looked at the bear, the more I decided I didn't like it the way it was. So, I re worked the foot pads, the ears,added a belly button, and changed the bow. :)

Well, Spring is slowing making its presence known here. The snow is melting away, and the sun is warming up the earth...despite the snow/rain/hail mix that has been falling off and on for the last few days. I had a meeting today with Lisa of Porcupine Designs. I am going to be designing felted soaps using Porcupine Designs handcrafted soaps. It is very exciting! Be on the lookout for these felted creations in the coming weeks. The plan is to have some available at the Quesnel Farmer's Market and of course available in my online shop! Stay tuned for more details to come! :)

Fleecy Taggie Dino Pillow

I whipped this little guy up today for the little boy of a friend of mine. The dino is for Thor the little boy I wrote about before. I spoke about his website Paws 4 Thor. He is making a big trip to the coast soon to get his private autism assessment. I wanted to make him something he could snuggle with, and make him feel good.

So, I decided on a fleece dino taggie pillow. I chose red because that is T's favourite colour. I free hand drew the pattern, and I am quite pleased with how it turned out. It did take a few tweaks to get him perfect, because fleece was a lot trickier to work with than I thought!!

I needle felted the eyes, and his name on the leg with wool roving.

Felting Soapy Goodness

Today, I wet felted my very first bar of soap. This is a fun and easy craft to do with your kids as well. I felted two bars. The first one I did kind of hap hazard like, and it didn't turn out as well. The second bar is a lot nicer.

Felting soap is a cool way to felt, and make something useful... Soap built into a wash cloth. This is a great stocking stuffer, party favour, or gift for any occasion.

I am also hoping to be pairing up with a local soap artisan in the near future, so there could be some felting soapy goodness in my future endeavors. :)

Here is what you will need:

1. bar of soap ( I used Ivory, because I had it on hand. ) I would use something that suds up really nicely.

2. Colorful wool roving or batting. ( I used New Zealand Corriedale and Merino wool.)

3. a stocking

4. wash board, sushi mat or anything similar for friction . This is not necessary, but definitely speeds things along.

5. Warm water & towel

What to do:

1. Wrap your bar of soap in your roving. You want to wrap it twice, end to end and side to side to make sure bar is completely wrapped. I think the first time should be a solid colour with some small wisps of other colours to try at first. I tried with too many colours the first time, and this is obviously for someone with a bit more wet felting experience, plus I didn't use the sushi mat the first time. You will be able to see a big difference in the first and second bars.

2. Place the wrapped bar in the toe end of a stocking and tie a knot in it.

3. Dip the bar into a sink with hot but not scalding water.

4. Start to lather up the bar by gently rubbing the bar.

5. Rub the bar up and down on your wash board and or sushi mat, flipping it over, and doing the sides as well. Wet again after a couple of minutes and repeat the process. You want to do this for about 5- 10 minutes to make sure felting process is complete.

6. Rinse lather off the bar, and remove from the stocking to dry.

If once you remove the bar, and it doesn't look completely felted, then repeat step 5 for a few more minutes.

Once the bar is dry then you can package up, and give it as a gift, or put it in your bath tub for your next bath! :) The skies the limit on creativity with this project.

Well, I am super excited, because I picked up my new Janome needle felting machine today! My husband was home for 4 days, and that proved to be an unproductive time for me. Yesterday, I helped him bring in more firewood, and dropped a large piece on my foot. I did have socks on, but it SURE did HURT! I got a cut, and some bruising. I don't think the toes are broken because I can move them, but the way I was carrying on you would have thought I had my foot amputated without anesthetic!

I have a friend lined up to watch Molly for a few hours over the next two days so I can finish my organizing, and do a big house cleaning. Thursday, I am going to get busy with my new bear orders. If things go well as I expect they will, I will be able to finish the bears so much quicker with this machine. I am already dreaming up new projects to work on with and without the machine.

The local farmer's market will be starting up in May, so I hope to get some things made up to sell there as well, maybe once a month. I am so excited about the possibilities!

Meanwhile, I am watching it snow again. sigh. Spring, please, please come to stay. :)

Paws 4 Thor

As some of you may have noticed, I have a new button on my sidebar for Paws 4 Thor. Thor is the little boy of my friend Erin. Erin is a single mom , and also my blog designer over at Minx. She has started a new blog for Thor and his journey. Please take a minute to read and get the word out for this amazing little boy.

This is Thor's story:

" My son, Thor, was a bright baby and by 15 months he could use short sentences ("How you doin' dude?") and had an extensive vocabulary for his age. When he was about 18 months, Thor slowly regressed to non-verbal and showed signs of aggression, self injury, and severe anxiety. Thor was diagnosed in November 2010 as Severely Developmentally Delayed, and is suspected by his therapy team to have Autism (the wait time for the official autism evaluation is long and we’re told it won’t happen until June 2011).

There are many issues that arise from Thor’s disability that makes living each day difficult, both for Thor and myself (I’m a single parent). Currently, I cannot let Thor go for even a second because he will run - usually towards traffic. He has severe anxiety issues, and also self injures (hitting, slapping, pinching himself and even banging his head on hard surfaces).
How will a service dog help?
A service dog would allow Thor the ability to have more freedom when we are in public by having him tethered to the dog and being able to walk along side the dog, rather than being carried or strapped in a stroller. A service dog would also be able to track and retrieve Thor if he were to get away from me, comfort him when he is upset or having a meltdown, and keep him from dangerous activities and bad behaviors (such as hitting himself or banging his head on hard surfaces - for which he requires a helmet right now). It would give me another set of eyes to keep Thor safe.

4 Paws for Ability takes a child with Autism and all the difficulties they have with verbalization, communication, and social relationships and pairs them with a well trained service dog specifically trained to meet their unique needs; to create a consistency in the child's life as their dogs go every where that they go, even within places of public accommodation, and the educational system bringing along with them: consistency, stability, and calm reassurance that the feelings of anxiety or fear are not needed because their trusted buddy is by their side.

Once accepted into the program*, I will have to raise $13,000 to help off-set the costs of training Thor's service dog. After the initial fund raising, it will take 9-12 months to train a dog tailored to Thor's specific needs. Once a dog is chosen and trained for him, we will have to travel to Ohio (from Northern BC, Canada) to attend an 11 day training course where I will learn to be the dog's handler, and Thor will bond with his new buddy.

I have talked about for weeks that I am cleaning up my craft room/office space. Well, I did a little bit, and quit. I got great news yesterday , that I am getting a Janome FM-725 needle felting machine!! Soo, I reallly need to have a proper place to work. I have started taking over one corner of the living room, and I know that my husband will be glad to see all of my stuff out of there, and it its proper place.

I have taken before pictures. SCARY! It seriously looks like an episode of hoarders in this one room. The weather is starting to warm a little, and the snow is starting to melt! YEAH! So spring is on its way slowly. I will be glad when I can open the windows, and air out the house!

Next week is Spring Break here in Quesnel, and I certainly hope Spring is on its way. :)

I can't wait to finish, so I can post after pics of my new work space! :)

I got some awesome news today! R & R Sewing Centre here in Quesnel is going to be able to bring me in a Janome FM-725 Needle Felting Machine!! It should be here next week!
I am super excited about this purchase, because it is going to open the doors to new and exciting felting work for me! It will also boost my production of current projects, and improve the quality of my work.
I can hardly wait! :) I had better get my craft room in order for sure now, so I have a place to work, and get all of my stuff out of the living room. Hubby will be thrilled. :)

My latest order is nearly done! I am waiting on some custom labels that I ordered that I want to put on him before I send him to Colorado.
This little guy is made with eco-fi felt, and 100% Alpaca fibre. Eco-fi felt is made from 100% post consumer use plastic bottles.

UPDATE:
Carisa and her team got flights , and flew into Seattle today. It is so good to have them back safe!!

UPDATE:

I am very happy to report her niece and her crew are alive and unharmed! However, they are not out of the woods yet. They are on foot, cold and hungry. They are reporting total devastation where they are. They lost their cars in the tsunami, and are about 1000kms from the airport. They had to spend the night on top of a hill in the elements.

They are currently in a hotel in Tono with no power, water, or food.
There has been a relief page set up to to help raise funds to get them back home. If you are able to give a little to help, that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you... all for your prayers, and continued support.

My niece through my husband's side of the family is in Northwest Japan in Otsuchi. She is traveling with 2 other companions as Cove Guardians for Sea Shepherd. They arrived early in Otsuchi yesterday, and posted on their blog that they had arrived. They have not been heard from since the earthquake and tsunami hit. We are all worried sick about her, and hope that she and her companions will be found safe and sound soon.

She and her companions were sent there to document, and film the slaughter of 1000's of Taiji Dolphins in Northwest Japan.

Well, I want a needle felting machine of some sort. I have seen them listed as needle felting machines, embellishers, needle punch machines, felting machines, and punch machines. I have done some research on them, and they are just a handful out there. Janome has one, but very hard to find in Canada unless you find a dealer to order it for you. Baby Lock is also a good company. I have a local shop here in Quesnel trying to find out the price for this Husqvarna Viking ER10 Embellisher. I really would love to have this, or a similar machine ,but if it is out of my budget, then I will likely get a needle felting tool attachment and convert a used sewing machine.
So we will see!

I didn't even know that Husqvarna made sewing machines! According to the lady at the sewing shop Husqvarna is the G.E. of Europe...they make everything! :)

I decided to buy some bulk merino wool batts, and start dyeing my own wool.
It will be interesting to see this stuff carded, and blended with other colors I have on hand.

Coming to Life...

I just finished the main needle felting process of the bear I am working on. It took 7 full hours over about 5 days to complete this part. The next step will be to hand sew the pieces together, and stuff with polyfibre. After that I will give him a face, and a cool bandana to finish off his look. Then he will be packed up, and sent to live in Colorado. I was given full artistic license on this project. I felted him with Alpaca fibre this time. I used New Zealand Corriedale wool roving for the last two bears. The felt base I used to felt was made with Eco-fi polyester felt squares which are made from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic bottles.

I now have orders for 5 more bears ranging in a variety of bright and bold colours! :) I can't wait to work with different colours than brown coming up. It will make my craft not so monotonous to a degree. :)

I hope though to get a needle felting attachment for my sewing machine, or a small needle felting machine to help with production time very soon. Definitely will cut the time down,and save my hands and wrists.

I hope to have this little fellow all done by tonight, and of course pictures will be following very quickly!

I started on a new needle felted bear last night. This little fella will live in Colorado when he is done.

I also made some pot holders and a tea towel for a friend last week. I think they turned out fairly well since it was the first time making anything like that. I used some corduroy and linen like material . I like the ragged effect because you can hide errors or imperfections easier. :)

I am sorry for the lack of posts this week, but I have had a lot on the go. I went to Prince George yesterday, and got to spend some time in Michaels! I could have stayed all day in there. I got some cool felt squares in some cool colours. I just got a bunch of felt locally too! I am waiting on some yardage felt to show up, and then I have some bear orders to start on. I am going to plan out some non-commissioned projects very soon too.
I hope all is well in your world. It is snowing here again, and I am soooo ready for spring.

I am in the midst of a few projects, awaiting materials to arrive, and working on trying to organize my life a little better. I have 4 bears to make, making a gift for 3 Lovelies, and working on hair accessories to display in a local hair salon as well. Not to mention a pile of laundry that is ever growing, and a 4.5 year old that is always moving. I am a tired lady.
My life is surrounded by wool roving, felt, beads , baubles, ribbon, findings, and a hot glue gun.

I am really excited about the coming bear orders, and can't wait to see how they turn out. :)

New York Bear

Well, my latest needle felted creation made it to his new home in record time. I mailed him on Tuesday, and he is already in Niagara Falls, New York!

I am so proud of this little guy!
I have made a listing in my Etsy shop for custom orders, and I have already had two more inquiries for orders! :)

The pattern is cut from a wool rayon blend of felt, and then needle felted with 100% New Zealand Corriedale roving. I then hand sew the pieces together, and stuff with polyfibre. All of the detail work is needle felted. His arms and legs are string jointed. He is about 9 inches tall in a seated position.

It takes a few hours to create these little cuties, but worth it in the end! :)

I have seen variations of these little gems around the web, and decided to make one myself as a gift for the little girl of a friend of mine.
I think it turned out so sweet! It was a fun little project. This is intended to be a hair bow holder, but can easily personalized to be a girl's room door plaque as well. I am going to be offering custom orders for these in my Etsy and Artfire Shops very soon! :)

Free Flying Kite

My husband came up with this cool idea for a kid's craft the other day.
A fun and simple craft for the kids to do on a snowy or rainy day, and dream of warm sunny weather!

You will need:

colorful paper
tape
20 gauge craft wire
curling ribbon
crayons
scissors

1. First cut out a diamond shape from your paper,
you can decorate it the way you want

2. Cut some pieces of ribbon for your tail

3. Tape the ribbon to the backside of the diamond for the tail

4. Cut a length of craft wire. I used a 20 gauge plastic coated wire.

5. Poke it through the center of the diamond, and secure it to the back with a piece of tape.

6. Shape the wire to look like floating kite string. My husband says to make it as straight as you can. I put waves in my example, and technically wouldn't resemble a flying kite. :)
You can go an extra step, and paste a matching diamond shape to the back to give it a finished look.

7. Put a loop at the end for the kids to hold on to.

Once your kite is put together, it is time for fun. The kids can run around through the house like they are flying a kite. Very cute!

I got the most fantastic phone call last night. I have been offered an opportunity to display handmade hair accessories designed by myself for sale in a local hair salon! I am so stoked! You never know when an opportunity will present itself, and sometimes when you least expect it!! I haven't made anything like this in a while, so I am doing some research, and planning designs! This is so great. I love it!

Tote Bag

I posted earlier in the week that I was going to make a gift for a friend's birthday. I chose to make her a tote bag. I have never done a sewing project like this before, and I I think it turned out pretty good for a first time. Especially since I didn't use a pattern. I made the tote with a heavy canvas like material with a flannel lining. I added applique and ribbon accenting. I ragged the handles because it was much easier than trying to turn the pieces inside out.

I thought something practical would be nice, since we just had Christmas. It has her first initial to make it her own.
I thought it would be nice to use to take to the pool, or a overnight stay at Grandma's house.

Well it is snowing like crazy here, and we have up to 2 feet of snow forecast over the next several days! So, no time like the present to get some stuff done....finally! I have to make a birthday gift for a 5 year old friend of my daughter. I am going to make her a personalized tote bag. I will post pictures when I am done with it. It will be my first time sewing a bag, so wish me luck. :) I am always challenging myself!

I am also excited that I sold a copy of my first needle felting tutorial over on Esty! I am so happy about that.

I also have got to get in that craft room of mine, and get moving on getting it cleaned up.

Organizing...

I came across a blog post about organizing your craft area, but heck if I remember where I saw it, but it gave me some decorating and organizing ideas for my craft room.

I have got to get in there, and clean it up once again, or I fear I might end up on an episode of hoarders! Just that room though. :) It always ends up a dump all room. :( I need a proper place to work on my projects too. I have the ideal space, and I finally am rid of the dreaded cat box! It is now in my husband's man cave. :)

Anyhow, I saw several pictures where button collections were separated in jars by colors, and it looked so neat. I went to our Dollarama (which is an awesome store for crafty things!) , and got about a dozen of these little glass cannisters for $1 each! Who can beat that? I have a whack load of buttons, and it is nicer having them separated like this. I tried little plastic containers, but I didn't have them separated. You can see them so much better through the glass jars, and it looks nice, and adds colour to the area. :) I got a couple of larger cannisters for a $1.25 each, and I will likely go back to get more to put all kinds of supplies, and stuff in. :)

When I finally get it all together, I will post pictures! :)
